A message from God

I'm telling this tale because my friend Jeffy hasn't told it himself yet (hint, hint) and I need to associate something fun with church today.  All inaccuracies to the story are my own.

My friend Jeffy was once the custodian at Old Church.  He had to quit after his shoulder started giving him trouble and he couldn't manhandle the chairs and tables anymore.  The church hired someone new.  Old Church has gone through a lot of custodians.  A couple have been good and actually cleaned.  Most were nightmares.  Serious nightmares.  I was once accused of not liking homeless people because I pointed out that the current custodian wasn't doing his job. He wasn't homeless and it's a LONG story.

Anyhow, the newest custodian is one of the those custodians that needs a little assistance in cleaning the restrooms, so Jeffy has been going in and cleaning the restrooms.  Recently, Jeffy was at the church cleaning the night after the kids program had been held.  He was in the women's restroom checking the "little boxes" that tend to stink to high heaven if they aren't emptied within a day. He opened one box, peered in and noticed something in there but not what he expected.  That happens from time to time. Those little boxes sometimes just hold regular trash.  He pulled out the bag and at the bottom was an offering envelope.  Yes, you read that right, an offering envelope.  One from the pews in the Sanctuary.  It gets better.

On the front of the envelope was written.  "God has something good to tell you."  Jeffy chuckled a little, turned the envelope over and opened it up.  Written on the inside was this message:

"God thinks you are nice."

Sometimes God shows up in the most unexpected places.

Random Brittany fact of the day

I'm sure it says something about me.

I'm not sure what it says about me.

It's not the first time I've noticed it.

It might distract people.

I know it makes some people laugh.

Here's my confession:

I talk with my hands.

If someone forced me to sit on my hands while talking, I could do it but it would be reallllly difficult.

I manage to contain the free hand movement while talking, at times.

It's not very professional to be waving one's hands about in the air with fervor in polite company.

But when no one is in the office and I am on the phone...WATCH OUT!!!

I guess the good news is that no one else is around to watch me talk on the phone and gesture ferociously with my hands...unless they are walking by my open office door.

And the person who's eye would get poked out by my wild gesticulating would be me.

The other piece of good news is that I don't tend to talk a lot when with a large group of people.

And that, my friends, is a random Brittany fact of the day.  =D

Friends

I received a text message this morning, complete with picture, that left me in tears...tears of laughter.  One minute I was working on the Monday Morning Message that didn't want to be manipulated the way I wanted it manipulated and the next I was laughing, loudly, in the office with tears rolling down my face.

I firmly contend that we all need someone, or a few someones, in our life with whom we can share the nitty-gritty details about daily living.  People with whom you can pour out the depths of your soul and know, for absolute certain, they are not judging you, nor are they laughing AT you.  People that you know your deepest darkest secrets can be unveiled and they won't tell another soul on earth.  People who have seen you at your worst and they still call or text or email.

I am grateful to have a few of those kinds of people in my life.  I am grateful, too, that it isn't a one way sharing street.  I can send the text that tells them about my latest adventure in being me and they will reciprocate...though usually not on the same day.

Here's to all those friends with whom we can bare our souls and know that we are safe!!!  And to text messages that make us laugh so hard we cry.  :)

Acronym's in my life

There are moments when I have to stop and just laugh at the absurdity of the world in which I reside.

In my job as an Administrative Assistant for District____ of Rotary International, I have had to learn a whole new lingo.  There is the District Governor, who can also go by DG.  The District Governor Elect or DGE.  The District Governor Nominee or DGN.  Now we have the District Governor Nominee Designate or DGND.  They, as a whole, are also known as the Governor String or the G-String.  I do not make this up.

There are a whole slew of people with the title of PDG or Past District Governor.  There are AG's who are Assistant Governor's for Area's...which completely confused me for the first six months where I kept calling the Assistant Governor's the Area Governor's.  The acronym still worked!

We also have the PE's aka President's-Elect and the PN or PEN (President Nominee or President Elect Nominee depending on the club).

My personal favorite, though has got to be the Rotary International President or RIP.  Can anyone blame me when I see RIP John Henry and immediately wonder when I missed the memo that John Henry died?  PRIP confused the heck out of me to until I finally figured it out Past Rotary International President.  My head is spinning.

Now, I have only just grazed the surface of the acronym's that I must be familiar with to speak Rotary.  There is TRF and PHS, not to be confused with PHF (I think I made that one up) and SARs, which is not a disease in the world of Rotary, it's the Semi-Annual Reports which also means it's time to pay your dues.

Rotary speak should not be confused with text speak, which is a whole world unto itself, especially if you are my Grandmother where "r dressing waiting fr u. hgs" means "Ranch dressing waiting for you.  Hugs".  I get ROFL (rolling on floor laughing) or LOL (laugh out loud), though I don't think people should actually use those acronyms when they are speaking...you know who you are.  If you actually have to say "LOL" instead of laughing out loud, then things must not really be that funny.  BTW is pretty well known as "by the way".  FML had me stymied for a little while (Sorry, my mother reads this blog, I'm not interpreting).  Once I figured it out though, I realized how incorrectly people use that one. Does a hang nail actually deserve something so severe as an FML?  I hereby declare that the 2nd most over used acronym, right behind the ever annoying LOL.

I remember using FYI on a paper for the youth group one time and the youth couldn't figure it out.  It's like they had never seen an episode of Murphy Brown in their life...please, you don't need to remind me that they probably hadn't.  (FYI=For Your Information, if you were wondering).  TGIF was made famous by the food chain.  But probably my most favorite acronym comes from a bouncy, trouncy, flouncy, pouncy, fun, fun, fun, fun, fun character...Tigger.

Versus

I have a bunch of posts started that I just can't seem to finish, which speaks more to my state of mind than to the subjects I am writing about.  By the time I sit down to write, my brain goes on a break.

So instead of writing about the deep subjects, I am going to share the pithy stuff today.

One of the websites I keep track of is the Highway Patrol website that tells of traffic collisions or road hazards.  I've written about it before...guy with broom on freeway...it can be hysterical reading.

Today's made me chuckle a little.  We always know when the rain is starting after a little bit of a break because the roadways become a mess, especially the road between work and home that winds over "the hill".  It has some pretty fun curves in the road and when the road gets slick, well, people don't slow down and accidents happen and I read things like this:

Toyt PK vs CD and Hillside (aka Toyota pickup versus center divide and hillside)

Green PK vs Retaining wall--don't think I need to decipher that one.

What made me laugh was the "vs" part.  When I think of versus I think of one entity competing against another entity...which I guess was entirely true in these cases.  However, I, for one, know that when competing against the center divide, the hillside or the retaining wall, a vehicle will ALWAYS be the loser!

You can't make this stuff up!

It's been kind of a slow day at the office.  I've been going through the membership charts and making sure we have acknowledged all the new members.  Slow day.

However, I ran across this little gem that I had seen a few weeks ago and it made me chuckle again.

One way to join this group is to be sponsored.  Let it be known that a certain individual named "Fish" was sponsored by one individual named "Fry".

And that, my internet friends, is my funny for today.

Hmmm, now I'm thinking about catfish...

The Olympics--a new sport?

I think there should be a new Olympic sport.  It could be called light rail riding.  The goal would be to try to maneuver your way onto an already full light rail train, jockey for position standing and then be judged on how little one moves when the light rail train suddenly stops, accelerates or goes over other tracks or around a corner.

A perfect score* would be for the person who can do all of the above in the middle of the train without holding on or leaning into anything...or touching anyone else if it's a REALLY full train.

That would be the kind of Olympic sport I could compete in.  I have a lot of training to do.  Lucky for me the light rail has been extra full lately and standing time has been in abundance.

*Speaking of perfect scores, does anyone else miss the old judging system for gymnastics?  A score of 15.70 doesn't mean anything to me.  Where are the 9's and 10's?  Why does everything have to change?!   Oops, sorry started channeling church people for a moment**.

(**Yes, I did take my extra snarky pills today, thanks for asking.)

Quote of the Day

Two and a half year old Emi, with wild morning hair, talking with Yo Momma (known in Emi's world as Grandma G.).

Grandma G.: "Emi, where did you get all that hair?"

Emi: "Jesus."

Brown paper bag

Every so often I arrive at church to find a brown paper bag sitting in the work room with my name on it. I love brown paper bag days. What's inside is always a surprise but a good surprise.

One of the church members is a master shopper/coupon clipper and she keeps us supplied with candy. Loads and loads of candy. I haven't had to buy gum for a youth group event in years.

Today there was a bag waiting for me. We received a bag last week, so I was a little surprised. I waited until I got to my office to open it and when I did I laughed out loud. Inside was chocolate and this...Oh she knows youth ministry well. :)

Laugh of the day

Today was a tense day. G.G. went in for a lumpectomy today, after being diagnosed with breast cancer a month ago. In the process of all the doctors visits, she also found out that she had gallstones as well, so it was a double whammy of a surgery day. She came through the surgery well and there is no sign of cancer so far in the lymph nodes, though there are still some tests to be done. We all breathed a sigh of relief after that news.

I didn't relax fully, though, until Meg and I exchanged the following text messages:

Meg: I just passed a guy on the corner with a sign that said "bet you can't hit me with a quarter." getting more creative out here!

Me: So did you try?

Meg: Nope, I was too busy texting

Me: Texting and driving! Naughty, naughty!

Meg: Yep, guess he should be glad that I didn't hit him with more than a quarter, eh?

I love my friends.

BTW--I do not condone texting and driving or talking on your cell and driving, or shopping in Safeway and talking on your bluetooth...but I needed that laugh.

It runs in the family...

So, I told you about Nat's song in the last post. It went pretty much like this..."You are 1 year, 2 year, 3 year, 4 year, 5 year, 6 and you get older every day."

Turns out, she gets her songwriting talent from her mom. I was walking by the computer in the church the other day and found a silly little ditty written to the tune of "I'm a little teapot". It's silly and fun and made me smile.

It started out like this:
"I miss my Brittany yes I do
I miss when we sing & take off our shoes."

Music world, watch out!

On the answering machine--update

The Pastor called me into his office today (yes, it's a Saturday, it was a church workday sprucing up the place, a job that never seems to end). Someone had called and left a message that went basically like this:

"Yeah, Hi. I go to the restaurant next door to the church. Yesterday I was there and wanted a glass of wine to go along with my food but they said they couldn't serve alcohol because the church is next door. I'm calling to see if there's something that you could do about that. They really need to serve wine with their food. So, hope there's something you can do to help them out and help me out. Thanks."

Ummmmm...couple of things here. #1, their being next door to a church doesn't seem to be the real issue. Rite Aid across the street sells alcohol and so does the liquor store next to that. I'm thinking a liquor license might not be what the owners want to get. #2. If you really need alcohol to eat the food at this establishment, I would find somewhere else to eat. Just sayin.

UPDATE: Songbird was right! CA code says:
23789. (a) The department is specifically authorized to refuse the
issuance, other than renewal or ownership transfer, of any retail
license for premises located within the immediate vicinity of
churches and hospitals.

Things I love about my job

My hands are currently a nice berry red. Fingernails and all. They are soon to be a very berry blue. Why, you ask? Well because tomorrow is messy night for the youth. And I have finally figured out (after years of messy nights!) how to fill water balloons with jello! The tea kettle is calling time for jello! Pictures tomorrow!

A trio of songs for Easter Day--edited for the correct video!

I love music. Music speaks to my soul, reminds me of days gone by and makes me happy, happy, happy. One of my favorite things about my job is being a worship leader. I love to hear the sound of people's voices join together in harmony and soar in praise of God. Friday night the worship team from my church went to Opinionated Friend's church and lead worship for the Good Friday service. At the close of the service we sang this song:

The smile wouldn't leave my face, the tears were threatening and the harmony was awesome! I'm blessed by our worship team.

This morning we will sing many of my favorite songs:
Lord I lift Your Name on High
Resurrection Day
We Will Glorify
That's Why We Praise Him
plus the standard Easter morning song, Christ the Lord is Risen Today.

The music will be uplifting and joyous, just as the day should be.

But perhaps the song that best describes this Easter Day for me is this one:
I couldn't resist the Alvin & the Chipmunks cover version. My apologies to Highwaymen purists :)

After worship I'm heading to Pearlington again...for the 7th time! Yes! 5 others are traveling with me and we'll be meeting up with Yo Momma and Papa Bear who went a few days ahead to travel and explore. Updates will be mostly on the Pearlington Blog so click here to read our adventures on the road!

Happy Easter! Christ is Risen!

Sunday Morning Bloopers

The pastor is on vacation this week, which meant that a lot more got added to my plate...including the sermon. The sermon was pretty fun but I hate, hate, hate doing the welcome and announcements. This morning is a good example why.

I had made all the announcements that I had at the 1st service and was having people greet each other when someone said "Hey can you make an announcement about the Crop and Craft day on Saturday." Sure, no problem. That is until I actually spoke. It came out like this:

"Saturday is Crap and..." that's as far as I got before my brain caught up with my mouth and the congregation caught on to what had been said. 98% of the people were in hysterics, as was the gentleman who asked me to make the announcement. 2% were not amused. Sigh.

Hello, my name is Brittany and I'm human.

Sillyness

This morning my hair dryer decided that it was done working...before I had the chance to use it. Not drying my hair in the morning is not an option. Not a pretty sight. Luckily there was another hair dryer in the house, though when it tried to eat my hair, I decided I was going to buy a new hair dryer.

My favorite place to purchase such items is that one big store with a bulls eye for their logo. They have all the items sitting out so you can "try them out" before hand. I like that. But seeing as how one of those stores is 30 minutes away, I decided to just go to the local store and take my chances.

It is amazing how difficult picking out a new hair dryer is. Seriously. Way too many options, gizmo's, gadgets and varieties to choose from. There was one for fine hair that promised add volume and bounce without fly-aways. OK. There were many that have the retractable cord, which was very enticing but I wasn't willing to take the chance on the cord deciding to stay inside it's home. Next. There was one that had free items in the box! Wow! But then I saw it. Not just a silver or black or blue hair dryer but a red one. Ooohhhhh... Lightweight, fast dry, that might be the one...but wait, what's that! A pink one! I was reaching, reaching, reaching for the box when I saw the problem. My mind flashed back to the the mornings close encounter and my decision was made.

I am now the proud owner of this:

Red is such a pretty, pretty color.

A lighter moment in the day

The Children's Ministry Department is in full-force tonight. The kids are hosting a dinner for the parents, which will be followed by a parent meeting. They've been running up and down the stairs all afternoon, putting up tables and chairs in the social hall and decorating like crazy. It's a little frenetic around the church today.

A few minutes ago a couple girls came racing downstairs and into the youth room. One girl, referred to as Middle Bebe on her Mom's blog, is very familiar with the church and I heard her say as she walked down the hall "I know exactly where it is." The second girl is new to the church. My office is almost directly across from the youth room and this is what I heard as they walked in: "This is the Junior high room. Oh my goodness the junior high kids have so much fun stuff in their room! They have a pool table and a TV and a juice bar!" (A juice bar? Nope, that's the Karaoke Tiki Hut but thanks for the new idea!) They were looking for something specific and soon appeared at my office door...because Middle Bebe really didn't know exactly where things were. The conversation went something like this.

"We need wrapping paper but not birthday paper."

"Not birthday paper?"

"We aren't wrapping birthday presents it's not anyone's birthday though Sandy's birthday and Brianna & Britney's birthday was this month. The kid Britney not you. Wait, is your birthday this month?"

"No it's not."

"When is your birthday?"

"September."

"Oh, well, we don't need birthday paper we need other paper."

We found the other paper, two rolls in fact. Truth be told it's probably meant to be birthday paper but it will pass for just general wrapping paper. They took the paper and headed on their way and as they raced back down the hall the one who is newest to the church said to Middle Bebe "She's the singing leader for the church." Yep, that's me. Singing leader and wrapping paper finder. I love my job.

My favorite line from today's newspaper:

"Police cracked down on a drum circle that has become a weekly tradition but, recently, has drawn complaints that participants are using drugs, blocking the parking lot and playing badly."

Forget the drugs and blocking traffic, it's the playing badly that really brought the police out! HA!

Different kind of valentine

Today was Come Away Day. Once a month I gather with a group of people and we spend 4 hours in silence and prayer. We have our own separate spaces and then gather at the end of the time to check back in, sharing how the day went. My day was spent realizing that I've been putting up walls with God, not really wanting to hear what God might say, at the same time feeling like God has been silent. Nice to know I'm sabatoging myself.

That realization has brought peace to my soul. I've begun to disassemble pieces of that wall. There's a sense of calm in my soul that hasn't been there in a while. I feel, well, loved. Which is highly appropriate to feel on Valentine's Day. It's not how I'm used to feeling on Valentine's Day. It can be pretty stinkin' lonely being single on Valentine's Day. In fact, it can be downright depressing. But not this year. This year, I'm going to enjoy being loved by God...and The Train Guy who, according to the Valentine I received today, likes "watching me cook and riding in the race car!" For those who are giggling about me cooking (Yo Momma) The Train Guy and Adventure Boy (formerly known as Little Boy) were over on Tuesday night and I "made" spaghetti. Therefore, I cook. When Train Guy gets older than 3, the truth will come out.

Happy Valentine's Day!
