Taking a stroll along the job posting road

There are several sites that I frequent these days.  They all have job postings in common.  Sometimes the things that I read there are very amusing.

Greenpeace is a big employer these days.  Their headlines always have fun little asterisks and exclamation points throughout.  **Save the whales! FT!**  Usually the slogan "Be the change" accompanies those items.

There are plenty of other groups using asterisks and exclamation points to draw your eyes to their listing.  **Fight____!  FT/PT! *$10-12/hr*!**  It does draw my eye...just not my attention for long.

Chipotle! is hiring! everywhere!  They are pretty aggressive with their job postings as well.  Daily there are notices about the "Job fair!  Saturday!" and in case you forgot it's at "Chipotle!".

One of my favorite job postings is the Medical Marijuana Drivers or Consultants listings.  Yep...that's one I will be avoiding.

Most postings are pretty straight forward.  "Administrative Assistant", "Sales Manager", "Graphic Designer".  These kinds of postings I get.  I understand what they are saying.

Then there are the ones that are a little more complex.  "Administrative Assistant II"--does that mean it's the second level?  Not executive?  Not entry?  What's the "II" mean?    While we are on that subject, what is an "Office Specialist"?  Do you have to have some extra knowledge of Microsoft Office?  I found out that it's just a fancy title for Administrative Assistant.  "Assembler, Icer".  That one sounds dangerous!  WAIT, it's for a bakery as in assembling and icing cakes! Oooohhhh...maybe I should go back to school for culinary arts...if I can just bake.  I don't really want to cook.

I could go be a sign waver/dancer.  Or maybe a part time seasonal bell ringer.  Hmmm...if I was really daring I'd try out for the bad girls club...it's a TV show, I swear!  On the Oxygen network or something.  I could get paid to do a study about shopping.  Something about those links always make me a little nervous though.  How do I know they are legit?

If I was better with numbers, I could have a job in a flash.  There are lots of requests for Accounts Payable staff or Payroll Specialists.  Same goes for Web Developers, Gamers and anyone who knows what iOS, Java/PHP, Analog IC, CNC or NOC means.  (There are more, my head just started spinning and I had to stop.)

Yep, there are a lot of jobs out there with some pretty interesting descriptions.  I wonder, if I got really good at deciphering all the job postings, would someone pay me to tell them what they mean?

**Don't forget Chipotle!  Now hiring!  Job fair this Saturday!**

Schedule

It's VBS week...that's Vacation Bible School, for those who are curious.  Not for the church that I am employed with but for the church down the street and around the corner.  A couple of years ago I was asked to lead music for them.  I said sure and have been doing so ever since.  It's always fun to see how other groups run their programs, helps keep the creativity flowing.  I also enjoy the fact that all I do is lead the band.  That's it.  I play 3 songs at the beginning, 2 songs at the end and am done.  This year they have increased the song load, so we have wound up doing 4 songs at the beginning and 3 at the end.  Not a big deal, it's fun.

As fun as that is, the reality always strikes me about this time during the week that I still have my regular job to do.  Morning VBS really wreaks havoc with my schedule!  My usual schedule allows me to have most mornings free, seeing as how I work a lot of evening hours.  VBS means I have to be at neighbor church at 8:30am.  Today, I went from VBS, to work church for a staff meeting, to a lunch with K and Creative Guy, to work church and then to the beach with the youth groups.  Really, not a bad afternoon, but I left my house at 8:10am and arrived home at 8pm...to a house that had been closed up all day long, it was 86 degrees inside, and plants that needed attention.  Yeah, VBS messes with my schedule.  But it sure is fun!

Hop-a-long

It's becoming a wild animal refuge around the house lately.  We had the Rat Invasion 2011, followed by the Great Alligator Lizard attempted invasion.  We successfully eliminated the Rat Invasion...which came to a stinky conclusion.  The Great Alligator Lizard attempted invasion was re-routed someplace other than the house.  Which was good because that thing was HUGE!  There would have been no sleeping in this house if that had gotten in.  But now, we have a new resident.  Introducing Hop-a-long, the Blue Jay.

Hop-a-long has a damaged wing and has taken up residency by our front porch.  It's rare to walk outside these days without Hop-a-long making his presence known.  I don't mind Hop-a-long.  I feel kind of bad for the bird, actually.  So does Papa Bear, evidently.  I was recently instructed to feed Hop-a-long at night, just put a little food out for him.  And maybe some water.

I'm okay with that, but I'm done with feeding the flock of blue jays that scare away all the other birds that we actually like.  Like the doves, the little sparrows and other cute birds with awful names (tufted titmouse?  really?) and sometimes, when they aren't too obnoxious, the pigeons.  Though the pigeons have this habit of flying into the windows.  Even with the blinds partly covering the windows, the pigeons still insist on trying to get through the windows.

Yep, a wild life refuge around here...well only the ones we actually like!

Commercials

There are a few commercials out there right now that cause me to yell at the TV.  Gain and their "gooder" and Jello with the parents who terrorize their children come to mind immediately.  Incorrect English and awful parents, quite the combo.  I know, I know, I could just turn off the TV.  I don't.  Stop judging me.

There is one commercial that is old but still makes me giggle every time.  At staff meeting last week we had a discussion about Cadbury eggs and I stated that I loved the commercial where the animals are "trying out" to be the spokesperson.  No one on staff had seen the commercial, so I found it (thank you YouTube!) and emailed it out.  So far Pastor E. likes the lion or maybe the cat.   Children's Director A. shares my affection for the cat and Choir Director J. has yet to respond.

Here's the commercial...what say you?  And while you are at it, how do you feel about said Cadbury eggs?  Fabulous Office Admin and I say a hearty "Yes!" (which resulted in a fantastic surprise on our inbox's the next day).

Preachin'

I'm preaching on Sunday. Every so often, I get the chance to stand up in front of the "big church" and speak my heart...well, with editorials...the youth and young adults don't always get the editorials...okay, the youth kids get a lot more editorials than the young adults. Anyway.

I'm preaching on Sunday. I'm excited about it because I'm going to use the following clip or at least I'll be talking about the following clip in my sermon.

Goodbye 2010

For the first time in four years I wasn't in Mississippi to greet the New Year. It felt a little strange to not hear the sound of gun shots amongst the fireworks that went off at midnight last night. The fact that the fireworks are illegal here made the sound a little more clandestine. I did, however, appreciate not feeling anxious about the bullets from the gunshots somehow winding up wherever I was. It was strange to wake up this morning, turn on the TV and watch the Rose Parade, not struggle out of bed at 6:30am to be at work in Pearlington by 8. 2010 closed a good chapter in my life.

One of my friends works at the S.C. Beach Boardwalk. It's a place that I have spent many an hour...I worked at the wharf adjacent to the Boardwalk for a couple of years. The Boardwalk has a roller coaster called the Giant Dipper. It was built in 1924. A little while ago, the ride operators of the Giant Dipper realized that they were close having a million riders for 2010. They decided to do a little promotion and try to reach the 1 million rider goal by closing on December 31st. This last week anyone could come to the Boardwalk, pay for one ride and ride as many times as they would like. My Middle School Intern, Jon-boy, and I thought it would be fun to go and ride Giant Dipper and help them reach their goal. So Friday, Jon-boy, R-girl and I headed to the Boardwalk. We arrived about 2pm. Our friend LN was there as we boarded the train, all laughing and having fun. We got off and immediately got in line and went again. We got off and went back to the line for another go-round. That's when we heard the cheers...the train that loaded as we got off had the millionth rider on it. LN told us later that she knew that the train after ours would be the one with with the millionth rider. We respected her integrity in not giving it up so that we could be on the train. So Jon-boy, R-girl and I have the distinction of being riders 999,973, 999,974, 999,975 (or somewhere close to that) on the Giant Dipper for 2010. I think that's a great way to end the year!

Goodbye 2010...thanks for the memories.

Learning curve

There are things that one learns on trips with other people. Good things sometimes, tough things other times, annoying things often. I'm sure there are a number of annoying things about me (and I'm not saying that to be humble, I annoy myself sometimes). I caught myself doing one of those things today and decided to walk away from a situation so that other's could achieve. It all worked out but I was annoyed with myself for being annoying. Yeah, logic missing.

Anyway, on trips with others where we co-reside in a home we learn who snores, who talks in their sleep, the person who wakes up the fastest, who is perkiest in the morning and who isn't (me!), who will be the first to volunteer to help with something and the last. We learn who keeps things super neat and who loses all their stuff within the first 15 minutes of arriving. We learn who will be the last one out of the house in the morning (Debbie), who takes the longest showers (Sammy), who needs the shortest amount of time to get ready in the morning and who talks until they fall asleep.

It's fascinating getting to know people on a deeper level, learning to navigate the nuances, dance around the unknown and completely unexpected, yet expected, when people snap after being pushed to their limits. I like knowing where the limits are for others, it's a good thing to know just how much teasing one can take and when to back off.

Then there are those gem moments. Those moments when someone does or says something that makes the room erupt, usually in laughter. No kidding. I thought I knew a lot about Harold and Kanda, I really did, but when in the midst of conversation Kanda said "Oh, they just need to eat green weenie's and die." I realized that I did not know them as well as I thought. It even stunned Joe who spent much of his life at their house. It stunned Kanda and Harold who claim they make that statement all the time and couldn't believe that none of us had heard it before. Believe me, haven't heard it...would have remembered it...am going to remember it from now on!

Monday night

It's 7:20 on a Monday night. I'm home, enjoying re-runs of "Grey's Anatomy". Why is it that I get addicted to shows AFTER they start the re-run circuit on Lifetime or TBS? I digress. It's a Monday night at 7:20 and I am home. This is unusual. Monday's are Worship Team Rehearsal Night. I'm never home before 8:15pm. But tonight someone else is leading the team because I'm going to Mississippi on Thursday and won't be here for worship on Sunday!!!!

I started my initial gathering of items over the weekend. Took my freshly laundered clothes and piled them in the spare room for packing. Tonight I pulled the roller bag off the rafters of the garage and then remembered my work boots. My poor $20 work boots that have seen me through 8 trips. They are showing the wear and tear, especially from the sticky floor at one of the houses in December. The soles are now coming loose. The toes are already wearing away, showing the metal underneath. Oh the power of those steel toes...I have sung many a refrain of "I am woman, hear me roar" while clomping around the Mississippi mud with those steel toed work boots. I've replaced my work gloves three or four times, but my boots...*sigh*.

Today my allergies came back with a series of sneezes and a raw throat. I took allergy meds for the first time in months and also decided to take the opportunity to enjoy some time alone before being surrounded with people (whom I love and am honored to spend time with, but really, this introvert doesn't get energized by people and I know it!) for 8 days. So I didn't go to work, stayed in and did...nothing. No preparing, no packing, no nothing. Just read a book, watched TV, browsed the Internet, played games and did...nothing. Feeling a little guilty about that? Check. Know that the next two and half days will be packed with things both stress-releasing (bumper cars, baby! lunch with songfriend and todd t.! a cut and a color, hallelujah!) and stress inducing (final preparations for being gone from church the week before Easter, packing, possible interview with local paper)? Check. Taking the day off worth it. Oh yeah!

And I didn't even mention last night where 7 women gathered around a table for good food, great margaritas, yummy chocolate, a little poker and a lot, a lot, a lot of laughter...and that's all you get to hear about that! What is said at the poker table, stays at the poker table. ;)

Brush with fame???

The LA Convention Center is right next door to the Staples Center, across the street from Nokia Live!, and down a block from the new Grammy Museum. When we arrived on Friday afternoon, Jon-boy and I overheard someone saying "Downtown LA rolls up the sidewalks at night...nothing is happening." Um....that's not my experience!

Last night was a concert that had a whole bunch of excited but buzzed people around Nokia Live! Lot's of people. Tonight there is even more going on. But let me back up a bit...

Today at NYWC the morning speaker hit a home run. Home.run. He spoke about change. Not a new topic by any means, it was the way he spoke about change that brought things that I've been thinking about in a full circle. My mind has been buzzing all day long...and it's been a good day for it to be buzzing. There weren't any seminars, now called Labs, to attend today. They had something they called "Open Space" going on. Basically people created their own topics and had a set time for others to come sit and discuss the topic. Great idea, but with my mind whirring from the morning seminar, and the chaos of trying to figure out what discussion started when, I opted to head back to my hotel room and take advantage of the spaciousness there to sit with God. I'm not prepared to talk about all that yet, but stayed tuned! On my way back to the hotel it became apparent that there was something going on at the Staples Center tonight. I made a mental note to check their website and see what was up.

Anyway, about 5:45 it was time to find Jon-boy and get dinner before the evening Session. I left my room to head back to the Convention with a stop at the hotel gift shop for some bottled water. Seriously, I don't know what hotels do to their water but there is a taste to it...water shouldn't taste! Rabbit trail, sorry. I bought the expensive water and headed for the escalator. Three men in suits got there ahead of me. I looked at one of the guys and thought "his nose has been broken". As we all headed out the front doors, a couple of women were coming in. One of the ladies looked at broken nose guy and immediately let out a string of Spanish, she clearly recognized him. It was then that the light bulb donned. The event happening at the Staples Center...a boxing match...broken nose guy is a boxer! Don't know who he is (boxing is so not my thing) but I have to admit, I felt a little more comfortable walking down to the Convention Center with a boxer in my midst. Hopefully if someone had tried anything broken nose boxer guy would have come to my rescue!

Tonight's speaker was Donald Miller, who's newest book just released. His talk was about the process of writing a book/screenplay and he tied it in nicely with how we live our lives, which is what I believe the book is about as well...I bought it but haven't read it, yet. Again, I connected with what he was saying so much. God is talking, what God is saying is still a little unclear, but God is definitely talking.

Jon-boy and I decided to skip out on late night options tonight...gonna save that for Skit Guys tomorrow. As we left, we noticed a crowd at the Nokia Live! area. It's been busy over there all weekend but I didn't go investigate what was happening. I heard someone say "they can't buy tickets for another couple hours" and my investigative hat went on. The TV just told me what I needed to know...people have been waiting in line for days to get first dibs on tickets to (drum roll please) the Michael Jackson movie. No joke. People have been sleeping out there for days to get tickets to the movie that supposedly is only going to run for a couple of weeks.

And that fight? Yeah, the Governator was there along with Rocky (Slyvester Stallone for those none movie buffs), Madonna's ex-husband, Mike Tyson and a whole slew of celebrities. My brush with fame...they were all in the building right next to where I was! Oh well, there's always tomorrow.

Weekend in review

Last Monday at this time I was driving home from a rest-filled time away with God. What a difference a week makes!

Yo Momma is healing pretty well but has spent the days since Wednesday either in her chair or in bed. Papa Bear and I have been doing our best to be good bedside helpers but it's pretty strange to be in this role reversal...for both of us! We'll find out this week if she will be in a cast for 4 weeks or if the cast will come off and physical therapy will begin.

Friday night I had purchased tickets to the Giants game as an early Father's Day present. Yo Momma wisely chose to stay home so Papa Bear and I had Fun Guy join us for the evening. I like going to the ballgame but can't stand watching it on TV. Much more fun to root in person and hope to catch a foul ball or something! Though our seats are never in the places where the foul balls fly too. Did get to see the first triple play by the Giants in 9 years. Very exciting. We finally left at the top of the 13th inning when it seemed like the game was going to drag on forever. Of course the minute we left, the excitement happened. Giants lost. We found a great parking lot that's WAY cheaper than the regular places...gonna have to remember that for next time.

Saturday a couple of my students came over and we baked bread to serve at Communion Sunday morning. The bread turned out really well and had the house smelling very yummy. Adventure Boy and Train Guy joined us for a little while. After not seeing them for a couple of weeks, it was nice to have them around.

Sunday was Youth Sunday and our annual Church Picnic, which meant extra work time for me! I love watching the youth come alive on these days, taking their parts seriously yet with humor and joy. There was a different air about the worship service, less formality and more joy. I think we miss out on joy a lot in worship, so having the youth remind us of the joy of worship was good. Of course having students speak and bring the whole congregation to tears isn't such a bad thing either. God is definitely alive in these students.

I did, though, miss the big movie screening that I was looking forward too. I had to cancel on Friday and by the time it came around to the free time I had on Sunday afternoon all I wanted to do was crawl up on my bed and sleep...which is exactly what I did. Guess I'll just have to schedule it in sometime this week!
